How does a Metal Detector work?


A metal detector is a device that finds the presence of metal within a number of materials. Metal detectors are useful in locating metal inclusions in many objects, such as stones, tiles, and rocks. They typically comprise a simple hand-held unit with a sensitive metal detector probe that can be manually swept over the floor or elsewhere. Other considerations include the number, and distance between, coils on a detector’s surface. Further, coils can be classified into single-coil and double-coil types. Because of their simpler design, single-coil metal detectors can be easier to use. They emit waves evenly across a large area.

Some are equipped with target identification capability, which allows users to eliminate certain targets without the need to look for other metallic objects. Unlike high frequency ones, single frequency detectors (sometimes called “contact” or “one-source” detectors) do not send out multiple signals. They are sensitive to very high frequencies that objects emit. This allows them to pinpoint target objects in very small areas.
